Provisional Coding Register
Working meanings are sensitising guides, not a fixed reliability codebook. Each of the 498 extract titles is a more specific initial code, searchable in the quotation index. Multi-coding describes the exchange as a whole.
| Provisional Code | Working Meaning and Boundary | Overlap | Evidence Routes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correction | Feedback that changes understanding, judgement or work; separate explanation, demonstration, revision and replacement. | Correction | S7-E02 · T2-E13 · A4-E10 |
| Repetition | Repeated practice, procedures or repertoires; distinguish learning routines from identical creative answers. | Repetition | T5-E05 · A3-E03 · S3-E15 |
| Approval | Validation, permission or evaluation; include offers, reviews, satisfaction and status without treating them as equivalent. | Approval | A1-E13 · A5-E07 · S6-E04 |
| Professionalism | Situated claims about legitimate expertise, conduct, competence, care and responsibility. | Professionalism | S4-E03 · T2-E02 · C1-E08 |
| Imitation | Using examples, styles or precedent; distinguish reference analysis, transformation, templates and copying. | Imitation | S8-E03 · T3-E26 · T5-E02 |
| Constrained Authorship | Limits or transfers of decisions over topic, research, making, writing or submission. | Constrained authorship | S7-E14 · T2-E13 · A5-E18 |
| Risk Aversion | Avoidance of uncertainty or exposure to failure; specify whose risk and distinguish creative, financial, safety and employment stakes. | Risk aversion | S6-E10 · T6-E07 · A7-E04 |
| Trust & Transparency | Information access, honesty, recognised uncertainty and accountable support; trust is not synonymous with obedience. | Approval, Professionalism, Constrained authorship | A1-E07 · T5-E04 · T6-E15 |
| Care & Emotional Labour | Relational support enabling participation alongside labour, expertise and boundary costs. | Correction, Professionalism, Constrained authorship | A1-E10 · T4-E07 · T3-E09 |
| Delivery & Labour Incentives | Relationships proposed between deadlines, refunds, review, pay and intervention; separate claimed incentives from verified effects. | Repetition, Approval, Professionalism, Constrained authorship | T2-E03 · T3-E11 · A6-E09 |
| Recruitment & Access | Campus promotion, referrals, credentials and school or alumni channels; not evidence of privileged admission rights. | Approval, Professionalism, Additional codes and context | C1-E01 · C1-E09 · T1-E10 |
| Standards Versus Outcomes | Process frameworks may support variation; a prescribed answer may narrow it. Similar layouts do not prove identical thinking. | Repetition, Imitation, Professionalism, Constrained authorship | T3-E26 · T5-E05 · T6-E12 |
| Negotiated or Resistant Agency | Refusal, selective uptake, alternative proposals, independent applications and exit; attend to the resources these require. | Correction, Constrained authorship, Risk aversion | S4-E08 · S9-E33 · A4-E10 |
| Time & Room To Develop | Reflection, research, repeated making and the possibility of delay, versus compressed production. | Repetition, Risk aversion, Constrained authorship | A7-E04 · T3-E21 · S6-E10 |
| Distributed Authorship & Credit | Different contributors and disclosure at separate stages; assistance alone is not enough to determine deception. | Professionalism, Imitation, Constrained authorship | T2-E14 · T3-E11 · A5-E18 |
| AI & Judgement | AI as reference, text assistance, reporting support or final production; preserve each speaker’s own boundaries. | Correction, Professionalism, Imitation, Constrained authorship | T1-E05 · T2-E16 · T3-E15 · T6-E15 |
| Ethical Representation | Responsibility to researched people and communities, contested experiential authority and resistance to generalisation. | Correction, Professionalism, Constrained authorship, Risk aversion | T3-E27 · T5-E11 · A6-E22 |
| Organisational Reproduction | Former learners become staff, shared methods and communities continue; continuity may support learning or close alternatives. | Repetition, Professionalism, Imitation | A4-E05 · A6-E06 · T4-E14 |
| Visibility & Reassurance | Reports, cases, photographs and touchpoints make progress legible to families or markets. Visibility is not identical to learning. | Repetition, Approval, Professionalism | A3-E13 · A5-E10 · T6-E15 |
| Selective Conditions For Openness | Partner status, manageable workloads, family resources and chosen clientele shape room for pedagogical discretion. | Professionalism, Constrained authorship, Risk aversion | T6-E14 · T6-E16 · T5-E06 |
| Interview Co-Construction | Leading formulations, familiarity, praise, correction and researcher examples shape the material itself. | Additional codes and context | T5-E08 · T3-E28 · A4-E10 |
Revisions To Consider: split repetition into practice, administrative routine and recipe; split approval into educational feedback, audience satisfaction and organisational authorisation; code authorship by decision site; separate risk acceptance and justified caution from avoidance of experimentation. Retain care, labour, recruitment and trust as potentially organising concepts rather than automatically subordinating them to obedience.
