Designing Obedience:
Behavioural Conditioning and Standardisation in China’s Graphic Communication Design Portfolio Education post-2020

A multi-perspective thematic evidence register examining how private portfolio education structures feedback, authorship, creative judgement, trust and institutional accountability.

This archive brings together the provisional interpretation of 21 interview and conversation sources across student, tutor, executive/administrative and campus intermediary perspectives. It is a working analytical resource, not a public dataset or a set of settled empirical findings.

About the research

This doctoral project investigates graphic communication design portfolio education in China following 2020, with particular attention to private preparation providers and the relationships between commercial services and pedagogical decision-making. It asks how feedback, routine, correction, standards and promised admissions outcomes shape what students feel able to question, make and claim as their own.

Rather than assuming that standardisation is always harmful, the research attends to the conditions under which structured guidance develops independent judgement—or instead shifts authority and authorship towards tutors, providers and application systems. Interviews, institutional observation and visual/documentary inquiry help locate these experiences in their educational and commercial contexts.

The broader inquiry also considers how alternative teaching practices can sustain reflection, ethical judgement, trust and student agency in design education.

Lemon Xueli Tang

Researcher, lecturer and writer in graphic communication design. Based at The Glasgow School of Art, Lemon’s research and teaching explore design pedagogy, creative agency, institutional power and critical methods. Their practice moves between research writing, participatory workshops, graphic communication and educational enquiry, with an interest in how students develop a capacity to question methods and make informed judgements.

Analytical focus

Core question: How do pedagogical and commercial arrangements distribute the right to judge, decide and complete the work?

The categories below are provisional lenses rather than final conclusions. Contradictory cases, uncertainty and differences across role positions remain part of the analysis.
